Netflix has just given fans another sneak peek at the eagerly awaited second season of Squid Game, and while some elements are a nod to the familiar, there are plenty of fresh twists to look forward to.
With season 2 just about a month away, the new trailer from Netflix lets us glimpse the intense games that await the show’s fictional contestants. The infamous challenge from the first season, featuring that creepy giant robot girl and the deadly game of “Red Light, Green Light,” is making a comeback. Seong Gi-hun, our lead character, is back in action, trying to steer the new batch of players through it—or at least trying his best to do so.
There’s a fresh spin on some of the games this season. We see intriguing symbols, like X’s and O’s, seemingly dividing participants. Could this be a sly nod to class struggles, perhaps? One intriguing game even features a merry-go-round, yet it seems Gi-hun’s focus is more on rallying the players towards a possible rebellion to stop the games altogether.
According to Netflix’s official blurb for season 2, “Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returns, entangled in a tense confrontation with the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). As new challenges emerge, the danger escalates, casting the spotlight on Gi-hun’s quest to dismantle the games for good. Will he succeed, or will the vicious cycle continue?” Unsurprisingly, Lee is back as one of the few familiar faces, joined by a fresh ensemble that includes a brazen youngster with striking purple hair and a mother-son team. Who’s willing to wager they might end up on opposing sides of the X and O divide?
Luckily, the wait isn’t long. Season 2 is set to hit Netflix on December 26, so mark your calendars!
