Elon Musk, known as the wealthiest person globally and recently aligning himself with President-elect Trump, seems to be setting his sights on the video game industry by launching a new studio.
Musk shared some broad and somewhat undefined intentions on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, which he acquired back in October 2022. This platform has been experiencing a dip in user engagement, particularly after the U.S. presidential election. On the morning of November 27, Musk expressed his views by saying, “Too many game studios […] are owned by massive corporations.” He then revealed that his own large corporation, xAI, is gearing up to start an AI-driven game studio aimed at “making games great again.”
xAI presents itself with a bold mission: “working on building artificial intelligence to accelerate human scientific discovery, […] guided by our mission to advance our collective understanding of the universe.” The company is perhaps best recognized for its creation, Grok, a ChatGPT-like bot that serves X Premium subscribers. Musk initiated the founding of xAI in March 2023.
For those of us who are deeply invested in the gaming world but have opted to leave X for alternatives, it seems we can’t ignore Musk’s maneuvers entirely. His ongoing relationship with the soon-to-be President Donald Trump, who is widely known for supporting his business allies and opposing their adversaries, suggests we should stay alert to any potential shifts in the industry.
