Merciless As The Sea

Once upon a time, Portia Maye seemed destined for a typical life. Her childhood, buoyed by her father’s love and the allure of the ocean, was spent largely at sea. That all changed one fateful day when the ruthless pirate Mad Molak attacked her father’s ship, Nightsdream, killing nearly everyone on board. Spared only because of her skills as a celestial navigator, Portia’s life spiraled into darkness as she was consumed by revenge.

She plotted the ultimate betrayal, steering her father’s ship into the menacing Dragon’s Tooth, taking down her captors. Miraculously, Portia was the sole survivor of this terrifying ordeal—except for Snug, her faithful puppy who became her only companion.

Portia’s journey is the epitome of survival. She not only lived through the Nightsdream massacre but also endured years stranded at the Dragon’s Tooth. Unfortunately, her thoughts were twisted by the desire for vengeance, a craving that grew stronger as time passed.

Unbeknownst to Portia, the Dragon’s Tooth was actually a Bleed—a mystical convergence of dimensions. Imagine a palette where two colors merge into one; such is the nature of Bleeds, where the real world and other realms meet.

“Entering a Bleed," as Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind puts it, "won’t kill you, but it can drive you insane.” And so, Portia’s descent into madness paralleled her growing mastery of violence, to a point where her ferocity eclipsed even Molak’s. When she finally exacted her revenge, her fate as part of The Entity’s realm was already sealed.

Portia’s humanity lingered only through Snug. This unwavering bond shows in The Houndmaster’s Power, wielding Snug’s tracking and grappling skills against Survivors.

For The Black Talon

Growing up within The Black Talon—a branch of the infamous Black Vale—Taurie Cain dedicated her life to uncovering The Entity’s secrets. Her dedication took a personal turn when her parents entered a Bleed for research and faced dire consequences. Taurie followed them, managing to avert the worst.

This experience only strengthened her commitment to the Black Talon’s dark mission, climbing its ranks with determination. While others like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto encroached upon the Black Vale’s sphere, Taurie actively sought out its shadows, convinced that transcending human existence relied on The Entity.

“Taurie genuinely thought her actions benefited humanity,” Thind explains, “but as she advanced, things just grew darker. She reached a crossroads that demanded a life-changing choice.”

This pivotal moment arrived when she was instructed to perform a ritualistic killing of Jordan Rois—an adversary of the Talon and haddie Kaur’s stepbrother. Knife poised for the strike, Taurie hesitated—a decision marking her entry into The Fog.

Inside, she realized the horrifying truth: her devotion culminated in a cycle of endless torment. Instead of crumbling, Taurie believes her real purpose remains undefined.

“Her devotion to the Vale might be her greatest asset in The Fog," Thind suggests, "as she clings to the belief that everything follows a plan, hoping The Entity will someday see her as worthy of being a Killer.”

This begs the question: why did The Entity pull Taurie into its realm as a Survivor?

“The Entity thrives on emotions," Thind observes. "It must have seen potential in bringing someone who would clash with other Survivors, fostering anger, confusion, and mistrust—all nutrients for The Entity.”

Taurie remains resolved to endure and excel, ready to play her part even if it means standing alone. Her abilities focus on swift disengagement from teammates and redirecting the Killer’s focus to withstand pain as leverage.

It’s curious to ponder how differently things might have been for Portia and Taurie, each having spent their own time in the Bleeds, yet only Taurie seems largely unscathed. Their places in The Entity’s Realm could indeed have been switched—but once embarked, there’s no straying from their predestined path, all shrouded in the enigmatic Fog.
