Elon Musk recently found himself booted out of Path of Exile 2 for executing too many actions in rapid succession. Musk insists that his impressive gameplay prowess led the game’s anti-cheat system to mistakenly assume he was using a macro or some sort of cheat. While this isn’t the first time Path of Exile 2’s support team has faced criticism, the real buzz for many is how the wealthiest man in the world still finds plenty of time for gaming.
Path of Exile 2 isn’t Musk’s first venture into the gaming spotlight. Earlier this year, the billionaire proudly revealed his climb to the 19th spot on Diablo 4’s global leaderboard. Apparently, those gaming skills translate well to Path of Exile 2, Grinding Gear’s newest RPG offering. If we take Musk at face value, his rapid-fire playing style tripped the game’s anti-cheat alarms.
After his in-game ousting, Musk tweeted a screenshot of the alert informing him that he’d been booted for too many fast actions. While actions per minute are often used by games to detect cheating, Musk was quick to point out that he wasn’t using any macros. Responding to a tweet from another user, he speculated that developers would probably tweak the rigorous clicks-per-second limit in the future. Given the myriad technical problems Path of Exile 2 has grappled with since launch, it’s not far-fetched to believe changes are on the horizon as developers continue to patch things up.
Interestingly, some gamers rallied behind Musk, noting that the game offers numerous active skills but paradoxically discourages rapid usage of them. Others, however, seemed more bewildered by the fact that someone so influential can dedicate this much time to gaming, achieving a level so proficient that it results in a boot for actions per minute. Despite spearheading vast enterprises, Musk has firmly established himself as an eager gamer. Beyond his escapades in Path of Exile and Diablo, he’s dropped hints about potentially acquiring Hasbro and starting up an AI game studio.
As far as Musk’s macro-free claims go, only a screenshot is available for the court of public opinion to deliberate on. Meanwhile, Grinding Gear is working on updates, though it’s unclear whether the anti-cheat systems will receive any immediate adjustments. Regardless, the studio has expressed apologies for the sluggish response to player support requests and assured fans they’re diligently squashing bugs.
