We might have to wait a little longer this week for the first trailer of James Gunn’s Superman, but in the meantime, he has given us something to enjoy—a sneak peek at the main theme.
James Gunn has quite the task on his hands right now. As the co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s the one steering the new DC Universe towards success, which will either bring huge rewards or potentially compel DC to rethink their interconnected film universe strategy altogether (after all, there are only so many times you can reboot a universe, whatever the comics may suggest). On his personal Twitter page, Gunn revealed that a teaser trailer for his Superman movie is set to drop this Thursday. This will give fans their first glimpse at the revamped DCU, at least on the live-action side, considering his animated series, Creature Commandos, has already launched as the inaugural chapter of this cinematic universe.
To keep fans occupied until Thursday’s big reveal, Gunn also shared a brief clip of what appears to be the movie’s main theme. You’ll find it up above, with audio playing alongside a GIF-ish clip of David Corenswet’s Superman soaring upwards—a beautiful sight, really. The music strikes a pleasant chord, evoking a sense of nostalgia. If you listen carefully, you might catch a familiar nod to the 1978 classic theme from Richard Donner’s Superman film, composed by none other than the legendary John Williams.
This fresh theme comes from the talent of John Murphy, who has quite a few notable scores to his name, including work on 28 Days Later, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and The Suicide Squad from 2021—a movie also directed by James Gunn. This marks the third movie the duo have collaborated on, as Murphy also scored Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Even after this week’s teaser, we’ll still have to be patient, as the new Superman is slated for release on July 11 next year. Hang in there—I’m sure you’ll manage just fine!
