Jinx’s infamous Super Mega Death Rocket zooms towards Piltover’s Council Chambers, disrupting a fleeting calm. The sight of its menacing grin signals trouble, and Mel Medarda’s alert kicks in with a shimmer of gold, hinting at the imminent chaos. It was at this moment I was convinced we’d eventually see Mel joining the ranks in the Rift, and it seems the timing is impeccable. Indeed, Arcane’s Mel Medarda is stepping into the arena as the new League of Legends champion, marking her debut just in time for the game’s Noxus-themed first season.
As we step into 2025, League of Legends is flipping its seasonal script. Gone are the traditional seasons, replaced by three rotating ones, each boasting its unique theme. To keep the excitement around Arcane rolling, Riot Games is kicking off the year with a Noxian-themed adventure, shaking up Summoner’s Rift, introducing a formidable new jungle monster named Atakhan, and tweaking the teleport mechanics.
Each season also rolls out a new champion from the focus region, combined with fresh skins and cosmetics that align with the theme. So when Riot unveiled Noxus as the spotlight for Season 1, it was only natural for Mel to be the next big addition. She’s a perfect blend of allure and intimidation.
Initially, there was chatter about Mel possibly being a support character. However, her skillset clearly favors the midlane, drawing comparisons to champions like Syndra. Her abilities are all about executing enemies, setting barriers, and controlling the crowd, making her a formidable presence.
Mel’s Abilities in League of Legends
As leaked by ‘LeagueOfLeaks’ on social media, here’s a detailed look at what Mel brings to the game:
- Passive – Searing Brilliance: Mel’s abilities or attacks leave a ‘Judgment Remnant’ mark on targets, stacking without limit. When a target accumulates enough stacks, Mel’s next strike will execute them, using up the stacks. After using an ability, her next basic attack fires three extra projectiles, with a cap of nine.
- Q – Radiant Volley: Mel launches a barrage of flare missiles that detonate at a chosen spot, damaging enemies within the radius.
- W – Rebuttal: She creates a protective barrier, rendering her immune to damage while deflecting enemy attacks back at them. This also boosts her speed. Non-targeted skills deflect in the enemy’s direction, while targeted ones bounce back to their original caster.
- E – Solar Snare: Launches a sun orb that snares enemies at its center, dealing area damage over time and slowing them down.
- R – Golden Eclipse: Targets all marked enemies, inflicting damage that scales with the number of marks. Unstacked passive marks get an extra boost from this ability. The damage dealt by ‘Judgment Remnant’ marks increases with each level of her ultimate.
The stand-out ability has to be Rebuttal. The capability to reflect attacks is a league first; previous abilities only negated incoming attacks (think Yasuo’s Windwall, Braum’s Unbreakable). It raises intriguing questions about its mechanics — can it reflect ultimate abilities like Mordekaiser’s? Given its complexity, it might have made more sense as an ultimate skill. Regardless, it’s an innovative addition, likely challenging for balance.
Mel Medarda will make her grand entrance with the League of Legends patch 15.S1.2 on Thursday, January 23. You can unlock her for free as part of the season’s mission system.
