Sins of a Solar Empire 2 hasn’t been on Steam for even six months, yet this strategy game has already dropped a couple of hefty updates to keep the experience engaging and, importantly, challenging. The upcoming content update introduces a new planet and a new gravity well, promising to shake up the dynamics of space warfare. Moreover, adjustments to the AI will make higher difficulty levels a bit more intense and less predictable.
Even though Sins of a Solar Empire 2 had the advantage of following a beloved classic, that doesn’t automatically spell success. However, since its launch in August, Sins 2 has been working diligently to advance, incorporating new content and gathering enough positive feedback to boast a solid 85% user rating on Steam.
With its newest update, aptly named Picturesque Planets, the tools at your disposal and the sprawling expanse you battle within are about to see some significant changes. One of the major introductions is the Icy Asteroid, a fresh planet that adds a unique look to the battlefield and serves as an excellent resource mining location.
“This frigid celestial object enhances the Commerce level, allowing players to extract more resources,” explains one of the game’s developers. “Additionally, it supports the construction of extra Crystal Extractors, considerably boosting Crystal Mining rates. However, it’s crucial to remember that Icy Asteroids will not provide a Metal Mining rate, so strategic adjustments in resource management might be necessary.”
Sticking with the icy theme, there’s now also an Ice Field gravity well. While you can’t colonize this area, it does introduce different battle conditions. Units within the Ice Field experience a slight reflective damage each time they fire, requiring players to be more tactical with their engagements, or they may need to wrap things up quickly to avoid unnecessary damage to themselves.
Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is also outfitting players with two new ship artifacts that offer unique enhancements. The Mass Negation Core grants a ship, along with its allies in the same gravity well, a significant and immediate speed boost, perfect for a hasty retreat. Meanwhile, the Weapon Symbiote boosts the firing rate of all a ship’s weapons.
Adding yet another layer, a new planet artifact, the Tachyon Comms Relay, is making its debut. This artifact “increases the maximum supply for the controlling empire, potentially allowing for larger fleets and longer military operations.”
Beyond fresh content, this update introduces shifts in Sins 2’s AI. With a new Chaos Factor system, opposing AI can now vary its fleet sizes, making encounters less predictable. This means that at higher difficulty settings, you might find yourself up against fleets that “overmatch” your own, presenting a stiffer challenge. Additionally, the AI can now utilize “preset item loadouts tailored specifically for each class of ship,” preventing opposing vessels from feeling too routine and predictable.
The Picturesque Planets update for Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is available right now, and you can dive into the full patch notes if you’re curious.
