Ah, the gaming world—ever full of anticipation and unpredictability. Today, it seems we’ve got another game potentially falling by the wayside: PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. This title, bearing a resemblance to Ultra Man, had an air of mystery about it from the start, as details about the game have been sparse.
Cast your mind back to the year 2020. If you don’t remember Project G.G., you’re not alone. Announced then, it quickly fell off the radar, with PlatinumGames offering little in the way of updates. Fast forward to the tail end of 2023, and director Hideki Kamiya, co-founder of the studio, made his exit. Naturally, this departure left many wondering about the project’s fate. Now, signs are pointing to the grim likelihood that this game may never see completion. A glance at PlatinumGames’ website, which showcases their work, displays just ten titles. Among these are celebrated series like Bayonetta, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and their latest addition, Ninja Gaiden 4.
Interestingly, a little trip back via the Wayback Machine reveals there were once 22 games on that list. This includes licensed games like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra, alongside original creations such as Madworld and the ill-fated Babylon’s Fall. These titles still maintain their own pages, even if they aren’t featured on the main site list anymore (kudos to Eurogamer for the find). Project G.G., however, has vanished not just from the listed games but lacks even a standalone page, with attempts to visit its URL merely redirecting to the homepage.
This essentially spells the end for the game, a conclusion that isn’t entirely unexpected given Kamiya’s absence for over a year now. PlatinumGames, facing a period of staffing shifts and reduced clarity on future projects, still has some lifelines. The announcement of a new Ninja Gaiden game might just keep their momentum going, sustaining the studio for the foreseeable future.
