It’s been just a few days since Warhorse Studios’ sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, hit the shelves for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5. Yet, remarkably, it’s already met its development costs and is pulling in profits for both Warhorse and their publisher, Deep Silver.
The game’s incredible start was highlighted by KCD2’s creative director, Daniel Vávra, in a chat with the Czech news site SZ Byznys. He revealed that creating this medieval epic took about a billion Czech crowns–which translates to roughly $41.5 million USD. For a bit of perspective, the original 2018 release cost 750 million crowns, about $31 million, and has since earned profits of 793 million crowns.
Vávra shared a bit of a personal anecdote, saying, “Before release, we made predictions on the sales, and, funny enough, I hit very close to the mark, missing by 300 copies. We’re quite pleased with how the numbers look so far, and if things keep moving this way, we’re in for good times.” On X (formerly Twitter), he playfully noted, “A week ago, I guessed our first-day sales. I was just 104 units off. My boss? He missed by 100,000 units. Might consider a side hustle in analytics!”
To ensure a successful launch window, the team strategically moved the release date up by a week, skipping the original slot that was set close to the launch of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Vávra added, “Shifting our date to February 4 was essential. Turns out, Assassin’s Creed got bumped to March, leaving us ample room to breathe and succeed.”
The game’s self-sustainability within a day of its release is undoubtedly impressive, yet unsurprising given its strong first-day sales of over a million copies. For a brief moment, KCD2 soared to the top of Steam’s Top Sellers list before being edged out by Civilization 7.
The positive reception went beyond sales figures; rave reviews flooded in, and the game set a new peak for concurrent players on Steam, hitting 185,582 just recently and is poised to surpass 200,000 over the weekend.
On a personal note, I’ve been a follower of Warhorse since my high school days when Kingdom Come was merely a Kickstarter dream back in 2014. Seeing the potential fulfilled in KCD2 is heartening. With its intricate open world, compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and hours upon hours of gameplay, it’s certainly a contender for 2025’s Game of the Year.
For those looking to dive in, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC via platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and on PS5. It’s a must-play for any RPG enthusiast and is currently priced at an enticing $46.19 on CDKeys—a deal hard to pass up.
