Phasmophobia, the hit co-op ghost hunting game that took Twitch by storm starting back in 2020, continues to captivate players and viewers alike. In an exciting update on Monday, Kinetic Games, the developers behind this spooky sensation, revealed that they’ve surpassed 22 million copies sold. Looking ahead to 2025, they’re not slowing down. The team has mapped out an ambitious development plan, which includes giving a fresh makeover to the game’s famously bland player character models. Here’s a closer look at the updates we can expect later this year, based on their Monday news release.
The first big treat coming our way is the Chronicle update. It was initially teased in a developer blog, and fans have been buzzing about it ever since. Kinetic Games plans to change how players collect evidence, such as those spine-chilling temperature drops or those unnerving sounds you hear in the dark. For the first time, these will be archived, enriching the detective experience. With the Chronicle update, the Photos tab will transform into a more comprehensive Media tab. This new feature will undoubtedly be a lifesaver, especially when a haunting goes haywire and your team is too busy shrieking to take notes.
The update will also add more layers to data gathering. Whenever you snag a first-ever capture of any media type, it’ll be marked as Unique, earning you significant rewards when wrapping up a contract. However, if you’re just stacking duplicates, the rewards will be much less generous. This nudges players to mix things up and use a variety of tools to assemble a diverse collection of evidence.
But that’s not all—once the Chronicle update is settled in, the Player Character Overhaul will roll out. Currently, players are stuck choosing from a limited selection of avatars that lack any real flair. The future looks brighter, though. A sneak peek at the road map shows characters in a range of shirts, hinting that players might soon get the chance to personalize their outfits between ghost hunts. This change would be a refreshing departure from the drab, forgettable button-downs everyone’s wearing now.
Come later this year, there’s even more to be excited about. Kinetic Games announced a brand-new map on the horizon, described as being “akin to the houses” already found in the game but with its own twists. In addition, some existing maps will get a facelift. The Bleasdale and Grafton Farmhouses, for instance, are set to undergo significant updates, adding new rooms and revamping layouts to keep those ghosts lurking. Plus, keep an eye out for holiday-themed updates, like surprises for Easter and Halloween. And peeking into the future, there’s a mention of something tantalizingly named “Horror 2.0” planned for 2026 that’s bound to stir your curiosity.
