Play for Dream, a Chinese company that’s been making waves with its standalone mixed reality (MR) headset, has plans to integrate Android XR as its operating system. This new device has been drawing comparisons to Apple’s Vision Pro, mainly due to its striking aesthetic resemblance. However, those who’ve had the opportunity to test it, including an ex-engineer from Quest, affirm that it’s more than just a cheap imitation, praising its craftsmanship and execution.
Currently, the headset operates on a customized version of Android. Play for Dream shared with Road to VR that there are ongoing discussions about switching to Google’s Android XR platform, though no clear timeline has been set. It’s uncertain whether this transition will happen with the current model or be reserved for a future iteration.
The Play for Dream MR headset is slated to launch at the end of the month with a price tag of $1,200. It appears Android XR might not feature until later versions since Samsung’s Project Moohan is designated as the first headset to roll out with Android XR, and its release date is still under wraps.
Despite being relatively unknown in the United States, Play for Dream has a solid standing in China. In a recent conversation with company representatives, some fascinating insights about their journey emerged. The company was founded in 2020 by Huang Feng, who also established Wanyoo Esports, Asia’s largest esports café chain, and Bixin, a major gaming platform in China, boasting over 60 million registered users.
The leadership team includes Chairman Zong Yuan and CTO Yue Fei. With more than 200 employees, Play for Dream has yet to seek external funding. Although they’ve previously tapped into the Asian market with other headsets, the Play for Dream MR headset is targeted primarily at the US XR audience.
Addressing criticisms about their product’s resemblance to the Vision Pro, a company spokesperson clarified, “We’re not looking to compete directly with the Apple Vision Pro. While inspired by its design, our focus was on creating an Android-centric device that aligns with our own vision and unique approach.”
While there might be visual and interface similarities to Vision Pro, Play for Dream MR distinguishes itself with the support of motion controllers. The journey for this headset began with a Kickstarter campaign in September 2024, raising nearly $300,000 from 215 backers. The campaign wrapped up in October, and initial shipments have reportedly started reaching backers. A wider commercial release is expected by the end of March, as stated by the company.
