The French voice actors involved with Apex Legends have reportedly declined to sign an agreement concerning the use of their voices for AI training purposes.
This revelation comes from Pascale Chemin, known for voicing the character Wraith in the French edition of the popular battle royale game. Chemin shared the news on Twitter, indicating that a publisher—likely Electronic Arts—had included a clause in their contracts to utilize their voice work for AI model training. Although the game and publisher weren’t explicitly named, all signs suggest they refer to Apex Legends and EA.
In addition, it’s reported that 31 other voice actors associated with the project also refused to sign the agreement. They collectively drafted a letter to the publisher outlining their refusal.
Chemin emphasized the importance of solidarity in this matter, writing, “If we don’t come together now to ensure a clause is included in our contracts that protects our voices—not just for us but for every video game dubbing studio—we risk losing any chance of protection and walking towards disaster,” as translated by ResetEra.
She added, “While refusing work today seems impractical due to limited opportunities and financial pressures many of us face, this is not merely about working. We’re being asked to surrender our expertise to help shape the AI that could replace us in the future. It’s a contradiction to everything we’ve been advocating against. It feels like we’re being pushed to undermine our own survival in the industry and to endorse AI.”
