NVIDIA’s recent GPU driver updates are stirring up trouble for GeForce RTX 40 series cards, and even some older models, while the company remains silent on a solution.
Emerging Issues with Driver 572.XX on RTX 40 Systems
Since the debut of the RTX 50 series in January, it seems NVIDIA’s attention to the RTX 40 series has waned, especially in addressing bug fixes. Although the RTX 50 series itself faced glitches like BSODs, the RTX 40 series was relatively stable until the 572.XX updates tailored for RTX 50 came along, sparking new complications with the RTX 40 lineup.
A discussion sparked by Redditor u/Soctty1992 sheds light on the shared struggles with driver 572.XX. Reports are surfacing with similar complaints: unexpected system crashes, blackouts, and display malfunctions that weren’t common with earlier driver versions.

Not surprisingly, many users found stability by reverting to the 566.XX drivers, available before the 572.16 roll-out on January 30, which was meant for the RTX 5090 and 5080. The RTX 50 series brought with it enticing features like DLSS 4, Multi-Frame Generation, and DLSS Override. These features aren’t necessarily the cause of every issue, but a tangle of factors seems to be at play needing further investigation.
For instance, one user noted that his RTX 4080 would crash as soon as Cyberpunk 2077 launched, a problem resolved with the older drivers. Another with an RTX 4090 experienced persistent black screens and freezes, all resolved by switching back to 566.XX.
Despite repeated bug reports since January’s end, NVIDIA appears to have largely overlooked the issues plaguing RTX 40 drivers, focusing instead on resolving BSODs affecting the RTX 50 series, which also took weeks to fix. Many owners of the RTX 40 series feel trapped, reverting to older drivers but sacrificing new features like DLSS 4 with Transformer models, enhanced Ray Reconstruction, and access to the freshly updated DLSS-compatible games list.
