Navigating the gaming world as a new fantasy RPG creator—whether you’re a small indie developer or a massive AAA studio—can be challenging these days. Avowed took a stab at it not too long ago, but if it didn’t quite meet your expectations, then Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon might be your next best bet. This RPG has been in early access for almost two years now and has just rolled out a significant update, marking its last milestone before reaching version 1.0 by the end of this year. Plus, you can personally check out the changes with Tainted Grail’s brand-new demo available on Steam.
For those not in the loop, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person RPG that channels a Skyrim-like vibe and similarly mirrors Obsidian’s Avowed. Its extensive early access period isn’t surprising given that crafting a vast, immersive RPG as an indie studio requires time. However, with the substantial 0.9 update released today, the game is gearing up for its official launch.
This update is packed with content, introducing the “almost final” prologue and the complete Act 1, which the creators, Questline, claim offers about 20 hours of gameplay. Early parts of the game now feature new bosses, NPCs, richer narrative elements, and a treasure trove of loot.
Among the must-have features for top-tier RPGs, there’s now a romance system, a photo mode, farming and housing, as well as an enhanced character creation tool. The soundtrack’s grown, finishing moves are now more intense, and “mini cutscenes” add flair to boss battles.
The update hasn’t just added features; it’s overhauled numerous aspects including combat balance, spell summoning, weather nuances, lighting effects, the UI, and the mechanics for attributes, skills, and crafting. This hefty update is laying the groundwork for the game’s journey to version 1.0.
Questline has its sights set on launching Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon fully in Q2 of 2025, so expect to see its release within the next few months.
If you’re curious, you can still dive into the early access version, exploring all the available content, or if you’d rather hold off until version 1.0, no worries. Steam has just launched a free demo for you to explore this improved RPG. Visit its Steam page to get more details and to download the demo.
