Ubisoft, the renowned French game publisher, is reportedly working on a new battle royale game that’s aiming to compete with Apex Legends. According to Insider Gaming, this new project, which goes by the codename Scout, is drawing some noticeable parallels to Respawn and EA’s popular title. In fact, at one stage, the artwork for Scout was so similar that it could easily have been mistaken as a thumbnail for Apex Legends. It’s rumored that some of the characters in Scout bear a striking resemblance to those in Apex.
The strategy here seems to be that Ubisoft is banking on luring players away from Apex Legends. Interestingly, Electronic Arts, which publishes Apex, has acknowledged a dip in revenue, suggesting a potential opening for another player in the market. A source indicated that the idea is to take advantage of Apex’s dwindling player numbers, with Ubisoft executives hopeful there’s space for another hero-based battle royale game.
Dive back to 2020, and you’ll remember that Ubisoft dipped its toes into the free-to-play battle royale genre with Hyperscape. However, that project didn’t last long, as it was shut down after just a year and a half. This latest endeavor emerges as Ubisoft also wraps up another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, set to end in late 2024.
On a related note, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to with the upcoming release of a 2.0 version. This next iteration is projected to hit the market sometime after April 2026, promising a fresh take on the beloved game.
