Many fans of Arcane shared that they felt the second season, especially towards the finale, seemed a bit rushed. Addressing these concerns, showrunner Christian Linke has provided some insights.
Arcane, no doubt, is a visually stunning series. Yet, in the second – and what turns out to be the final – season, the storyline felt somewhat scattered. It seemed to juggle too many plotlines, each deserving at least another season to be properly developed. When talking with GamesRadar, Christian Linke touched on the fan feedback regarding the pacing. “The pacing of season 2 has a different feel compared to season 1,” Linke noted.
He went on to say, “I understand where people are coming from with that opinion. While a large chunk of the audience enjoyed it, some feel it’s rushed. They’re asking what’s happening.” According to GamesRadar, part of what made season one so compelling was the intricate relationships between characters, which unfolded thoughtfully over time. In contrast, season two seemed to zoom past these developments to reach a hurried conclusion. Linke admitted that they took a different approach in crafting season 2, aiming for creative experimentation and bold storytelling choices.
“For most viewers, this strategy resonated well. However, some wanted a more direct continuation of season one’s style and feel let down. While it’s disappointing that some fans feel this way, I understand their view.” One of the challenges Linke acknowledged was the introduction of additional characters from the League of Legends world, some of whom weren’t even included. Even though fans critiqued the overwhelming amount of content, there were others longing for even more.
“There’s always a balance to strike. Some believe it’s overloaded, others question the absence of characters like Camille, Blitzcrank, and Twitch from Piltover,” Linke explained. “While some argue there’s too much, others feel we missed opportunities. We tried our best to incorporate the right amount of storytelling.”
In my opinion, Arcane could’ve benefited from an additional season, but given the substantial production costs, it’s understandable why they concluded it as they did. With Riot Games hinting at more multimedia content on the horizon, it seems they had a reason to wrap things up this way.
