Assassin’s Creed Shadows: A Strong and Unmistakable Theme Emerges

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows setting its sights on 16th-century Japan, fans might recognize a few familiar threads woven into its narrative. The story beats revolve around a classic mission: eliminating the ever-present Templars. On top of that, players find themselves engrossed in the task of rebuilding the Brotherhood, rallying allies to defend Japan. Yet, the most resonant theme, at its heart, is one that’s stood the test of time: found family.

This motif has been a beloved narrative cornerstone across countless titles, and Assassin’s Creed isn’t new to it. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, characters endeavor to discover their own place, forge new lifelong bonds, and fiercely protect their circle. While this setup might run parallel to familiar lines, it still paves the way for a captivating journey.

From the outset, the theme of found family is unmistakably prominent. As the narrative kicks off, after Oda Nobunaga devastates the Iga clan, ending Nagato’s life and leaving Naoe for dead, she finds salvation through Sorin, a mysterious man, and Junjiro, a young boy. While initially cautious, Naoe gradually grows to trust and cherish them as she recuperates. Not only do they form tight-knit connections, but they also become pivotal in helping her rebuild the shattered Brotherhood.

Throughout her quest, Naoe encounters various characters she grows to trust and protect. However, none become more cherished than Junjiro, treating him as if he were truly family. Despite her role in his father’s death, Junjiro reciprocates her loyalty. Their bond fuels much of the plot, enhancing the richness of Naoe’s journey across Japan.

Naoe’s evolving dynamics don’t end there. Alongside dual protagonist Yasuke, they too embody the essence of found family. Initially on opposing sides, with Yasuke working under Nobunaga and implicated in the demise of one of the last Japanese assassins, tensions seem inevitable. However, aided by Junjiro, Naoe chooses to spare Yasuke, who, in turn, pledges to aid her mission. Together, they aim to dismantle the Shinbakufu, forming an unshakable alliance. Though perhaps not as intimate as Naoe’s bond with those who saved her, this journey heavily leans on found family.

Naoe and Yasuke’s intertwined stories revolve around this concept, each striving for the well-being of their allies. Viewed through both characters’ lenses, the tale takes a unique and riveting turn for the Assassin’s Creed series—one yet unexplored. As Assassin’s Creed Shadows marks just the beginning chapter, the adventure’s future promises to be as unpredictable as it is exciting.
