If you’ve been enjoying the thrill of bringing your Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 mods into online battles, there’s some news you might want to hear. Developer Saber Interactive has announced a change starting this December, which will bar mods from public matches due to some technical hitches affecting even those who don’t use mods.
This update was shared in a friendly Steam post by Space Marine 2’s game director Dmitriy Grigorenko. He kicked off the announcement by reassuring everyone that the developers are big fans of mods.
“We always intended to make our game moddable from the get-go, which is why our game pack files aren’t encrypted,” Grigorenko explained. “As a developer, it’s a joy to see the creativity of our community. Mods are fantastic, and they definitely help extend the life of the game.”
“That said, we also have a responsibility to maintain game stability and work towards a seamless experience for all players. Our data indicates that a significant portion of recent server stability issues are tied to mods, affecting users even if they don’t have mods themselves. We’ve also received reports of corrupted save files from players interacting with mod users.”
With this in mind, December’s major update will restrict players with mods from joining public online sessions. However, Saber Interactive clarified that mods will still be welcome in private ops lobbies and upcoming custom Eternal War lobbies.
The idea is to let mod enthusiasts enjoy their creations among friends without impacting the public gaming experience. Sounds good in theory—everyone gets what they want.
Though, as with any changes in the gaming world, minor frustrations may surface—because, you know, gaming. But one can hope, right?
Grigorenko also mentioned, “We’ll provide an easy entry point to our backend for games with mods so that modders won’t have to hack the game with each update. And if we inadvertently disrupt this mod pipeline, we’ll fix it. We’ll also be releasing some tools to help modders work more easily.”
This is all pretty exciting as it will simplify things for mod creators, even if public sessions are off-limits. Time to dive back into those private games with your fellow mod enthusiasts!
