Balatro, the indie card game sensation, has impressively sold more than 3.5 million copies. This exciting milestone was recently unveiled on the game’s official Twitter page, with a light-hearted nod to its humble beginnings, courtesy of its creator, LocalThunk.
In a playful Tweet, LocalThunk reminisced, “Initially, I just wanted to create a game for myself and a handful of friends.”
In a candid conversation with GQ, LocalThunk revealed mixed feelings about the game’s overwhelming success, expressing that sometimes he wishes Balatro had remained just a personal project.
“I’m incredibly thankful for how this has transformed my life,” he shared. “However, I often find myself nostalgic for those early days. It was simply a pastime that allowed me to unwind. At times, I ponder if I might have been happier had I not introduced this game to the wider world.”
Reflecting on the whirlwind the past year has been, he added, “This has undoubtedly been the most challenging year of my life. Recently, I’ve focused on figuring out how to recapture the joy and tranquility of those early creative days, when developing the game was just a relaxing hobby. That’s the place I seek to return to.”
Remarkably, Balatro managed to sell over a million copies merely a month post-launch, back in March.
