If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might agree that Birmingham doesn’t immediately spring to mind as an ideal setting for a video game. But what if we dial it back to the 14th century and throw in hordes of zombies? Now we’re talking! That’s the intriguing premise behind “God Save Birmingham.” After catching the latest eight-minute gameplay reveal, it’s become my top contender on the list of upcoming zombie games I can’t wait to play.
Typically, I gravitate towards co-op zombie games loaded with vast hordes and outrageous weaponry—think “Call of Duty Zombies” or “Dead Island 2.” So, I’ve been eagerly awaiting titles like “Killing Floor 3” and “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando,” though news on the latter has been rather sparse. However, “God Save Birmingham” has unexpectedly overtaken them in my anticipation rankings.
This isn’t your standard co-op horde shooter where you can bash zombies with unique weapons. Instead, as seen in IGN’s extended trailer, it channels a “The Last of Us” vibe, featuring third-person stealth and gritty takedown moves. While I’m skeptical the narrative will match the emotional weight of TLOU, the zombie combat certainly echoes its style.
The game also highlights environmental interaction. You can barricade doors with furniture, use ladders as makeshift bridges, or stand on chairs to reach high places. With everything behaving according to realistic physics, you’re looking at an engaging sandbox experience.
The trailer delves into its immersive survival mechanics as well. Expect meters tracking hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic. Managing these will involve real-time inventory actions, so no quick snacks here! Injuries affect mobility, and you can dismantle objects for materials. Plus, there’s a full cooking system in play.
Visually, it’s stunning, and the medieval backdrop offers a fresh twist on the zombie survival genre. Though there’s no release date yet, an early access launch is in the pipeline.
