Sonic the Hedgehog and racing games go way back. From the Sonic Drift titles in the ’90s to the inventive Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, our beloved blue hedgehog has zipped through numerous tracks over the years. While Team Sonic Racing, the latest console entry, received mixed reviews, Sega is ready to make a comeback with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. After teasing the game at The Game Awards 2024, they have now offered us a glimpse into the gameplay.
During the February 12 State of Play, a brand-new Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds trailer hit the scene, giving fans a taste of what to expect. Familiar faces like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, and Amy are stepping on the gas, joined by characters such as Silver, Omega, Jet the Hawk, Cream the Rabbit, Vector, Charmy, and Big the Cat. Sage from Sonic Frontiers was also spotted in the trailer. According to Sega, this game will boast the largest roster in the history of the series.
For those eager to try it out, a network test for PS5 players kicks off on February 21. As mentioned in a PlayStation Blog post, this test will give fans an early look at some of the game’s features. There’s no word yet on whether similar tests will be available for other platforms, so stay tuned.
Along with showcasing the racers and announcing the network test, Sega unveiled some unique new features this game is packing. One exciting addition is the Travel Rings, which let the leading player transport the race to a different world, keeping each race fresh. Drawing inspiration from previous titles, transformation abilities from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed make a return. And yes, hoverboards from the Sonic Riders games are back, thanks to the inclusion of Extreme Gear. The game also brings a slew of new customization options and gadgets into the mix.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is shaping up to be a monumental release for the series. Fans have a lot to anticipate in the coming months, and with the network test just around the corner, we’re all eager to find out the official release date for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
