In Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll encounter the enchanting dapperwings—flying creatures that inhabit the game’s mystical environments. Early on, your task is to capture one of these fascinating beings for "Samin’s Research Report," a side quest set by the research team at the Windward Plains base camp.
This quest comes after another, "Dareel’s Research Report," where you’re tasked with capturing the elusive tracktail lizards. To aid your efforts, we’ve laid out a guide detailing where you can locate these dapperwings and successfully capture one to complete the mission.
Where to Find Dapperwings in Monster Hunter Wilds
Your journey to locate a dapperwing begins in the vivid expanse of the Scarlet Forest. A strategic starting point is around the Bower of the Great Tree found in Area 7, near a pop-up camp. Once there, we ventured into Area 6 and discovered three promising spots teeming with dapperwings.
Based on our adventures, dapperwings often travel in groups, favoring the branches of fallen trees. You’re most likely to catch a glimpse of them during daylight hours—just listen for their distinctive bird-like calls. For extra tips, aim east from the "6" marker on your map and focus on scanning the trees for any signs of the birds.
How to Catch a Dapperwing in Monster Hunter Wilds
After spotting a dapperwing, it’s time to capture one. Grab your capture net from your item bar or the Essential Items radial menu. If the target is perched too high, hop on your Seikret for some elevation, then use your capture net from its back.
Approach the dapperwings with a steady pace to avoid startling them. Unlike those skittish tracktail lizards, dapperwings are generally situated high enough not to flee from close contact. Use the new rectangle reticle—move in until it turns from yellow to orange, then take the shot.
Remember, when deploying the net, opt for the L2/LT button, not the typical square/X key.
Successfully completing "Samin’s Research Report" will earn you ten blue mushrooms, five units of honey, 50 guild points, and some valuable experience points for both your hunter rank and your trusty palico.
