Since its release in November 2018, Fallout 76 has undergone an impressive evolution. Through regular updates, Bethesda has introduced a slew of new features including NPCs, questlines, weapons, Vault raids, expanded map areas, and expeditions that transport players to fan-favorite destinations. The recent Gleaming Depths update introduced an exciting multi-stage raid and rewarded players with coveted 4-Star Legendary gear.
Despite its journey so far, Fallout 76 is still in the midst of growth. In a recent chat with Game Rant, Fallout 76’s production director, Bill LaCoste, shared insights into the ongoing evolution of the game. Since joining the multiplayer project in 2019, LaCoste has overseen many additions and enhancements. The team is now on the verge of including a long-awaited feature—playable Ghouls.
During our conversation, LaCoste explained that the Glow meter is perhaps the most distinctive aspect of playing as a Ghoul. This meter enables players to use radiation to enhance their Ghoulish capabilities and activate unique combat abilities. Another notable feature is the Feral meter, which takes the place of hunger and thirst, and can be managed with Chems and radiated food. The game also introduces new perks tailored for Ghouls.
Discussing the Glow meter’s abilities, LaCoste noted that while favorites have yet to emerge, abilities such as increased melee and ranged damage, and faster Glow regeneration stand out. The development team is actively experimenting with different loadouts, but LaCoste is eager to see the creative builds the community will develop.
As for potential overpowered builds, the team is still discovering the capabilities of playing as a Ghoul. They are currently testing across various scenarios, such as raids and daily operations, where Ghouls may have special advantages.
LaCoste expressed the team’s excitement about allowing players to genuinely experience life as a Ghoul in the wasteland. They aimed for a more immersive approach beyond just cosmetic changes, emphasizing gameplay features like the Glow meter, Feral meter, and new Perks to faithfully capture the Ghoul experience.
Reflecting on community interactions, LaCoste highlighted events like the Chad: Fallout 76 podcast’s charitable initiatives and the community’s ongoing support for causes like St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The camaraderie and creativity exhibited during these events, especially on occasions like Fallout Day, are cherished memories for LaCoste.
Looking back on his tenure since just before the Wastelanders update, Bill LaCoste expressed particular pride in this expansion. Wastelanders was pivotal, breathing new life into Appalachia and setting the stage for subsequent updates. Now, with the introduction of playable Ghouls and the Gleaming Depths, the game is poised for further significant changes, continuing to build on its rich history and evolving gameplay.
When asked about his personal connection to Fallout, LaCoste affirmed his passion for the series. Fondly recalling purchasing Fallout 1 without prior announcements and the monumental experience of stepping into Fallout 3’s 3D world, he expressed a deep, lasting affinity for Bethesda’s Fallout universe.
For LaCoste, working on Fallout is a dream realized. He cherishes the iconic “stepping-out” moments in Bethesda games and is eager to continue contributing to this beloved series. His favorite moment remains stepping out into the open world of Fallout 3, captivated by the expansive vistas before him.
Overall, Bill LaCoste’s tenure on Fallout 76 has been marked by collaborative, team-driven advancements, and a dedication to enhancing both the game and the player experience, while listening closely to community feedback. His and the team’s efforts continue to push the boundaries, bringing Fallout 76 closer to its limitless potential.
