Yesterday, D&D Beyond made an exciting announcement: it will soon begin offering the sourcebook for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, developed by the respected Swedish publisher, Free League. Even though the announcement claims it’s a “brand new adaptation,” this guide actually saw its first release last year. It’s rooted in the second edition of Free League’s One Ring TTRPG, crafted by Francesco Nepitello. Whether brand new or not, this highly praised ruleset—now reimagined for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons—stands out as one of the top tabletop role-playing games set in Tolkien’s universe. Plus, it can now be effortlessly incorporated into D&D’s dedicated virtual tabletop.
This hefty 240-page guide comes packed with features: six classes, 12 subclasses, 14 species, and 42 unique feats, all ready to be utilized in D&D Beyond’s character creation tool. Free League has captured the essence of epic adventures akin to those in Tolkien’s original works, which have deeply influenced modern fantasy and D&D itself. In addition, the guide provides adventure paths for party levels ranging from 1 to 10, complete with fresh maps and monsters that integrate well with D&D Beyond’s tactical VTT, Maps, which is currently in its beta phase.
Tailored specifically for Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition, the sourcebook’s mechanics promise to enhance gameplay. Although it’s not updated for the 2024 edition, its backward compatibility ensures players can enjoy the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying book in their upcoming games. For those interested, the D&D Beyond edition is available at a special price of $29.99, while the original version can be purchased from Free League’s website for a little over $50.
