nDreams, known for its free-to-play shooter, FRENZIES, recently announced that the game will be moving out of its early access phase by the end of this year. However, contrary to earlier plans, it won’t be making its way to PSVR 2.
The studio released a statement addressing this change of plans, assuring fans that while FRENZIES won’t be on PSVR 2, there’s something else exciting in store for the platform:
“We’re thrilled to share that FRENZIES will remain free-to-play once it exits Early Access later this year! The response from the players since our Early Access launch on Meta Quest has been phenomenal. Players have embraced the chaotic fun that FRENZIES offers, and as we prepare to leave Early Access, our goal is to build on that positive response.
In prioritizing the best possible version of FRENZIES, we’ve had to make the tough decision to focus entirely on the Meta Quest release and forgo launching on PSVR 2. We understand that this will be disappointing to those eagerly waiting for the PSVR 2 version, but rest assured, we have other exciting PSVR 2 news to share in the near future!
Expect more updates on FRENZIES as we reveal our Early Access roadmap in the coming weeks.”
FRENZIES initially launched in early access for Quest 2 and above back in October 2024. It offers a high-octane arena shooting experience, complete with a variety of weapons and game modes, all of which deliver an unexpectedly polished VR-native gameplay adventure.
No doubt PSVR 2 users looking forward to the release will be disheartened, but from the studio’s standpoint, the decision seems to make a lot of sense for a few reasons.
Over the past year, the Quest platform has notably gained traction among younger users, especially after the release of the $300 Quest 3S, which has simultaneously increased the popularity of free-to-play content on the platform.
Back in February, Samantha Ryan, Meta VP of Metaverse Content, mentioned, “We anticipate free-to-play (F2P) becoming a widely effective strategy for developers, who have mostly depended on premium apps so far. However, we don’t see F2P completely overtaking premium apps—both models are likely to coexist.”
Additionally, developers face a challenging economic climate. nDreams is likely aiming to make the most of their resources by focusing on their largest potential player base. Recently, the studio consolidated nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new internal division called ‘Compass’ following some layoffs.
Despite this shift, nDreams remains a significant player in the XR gaming landscape, having produced and published an impressive array of top-tier VR games like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops.
