Rockstar Games is renowned for its tendency to postpone its major releases for the sake of refinement. When Red Dead Redemption 2 was in the works, it faced public delays not once, but three times. Similarly, Grand Theft Auto 5 experienced a major delay back in 2013, moving from its initial spring release to a September debut of the same year. However, as of this past Thursday, it seems GTA 6 is set to keep its current release schedule.
The announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6 came in 2022, with Rockstar stating that the development of the next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto saga was already “well underway.” They shared this in part as a reaction to the incredible longevity of GTA 5, which has maintained its popularity since 2013, much of this due to the ongoing updates and support for Grand Theft Auto Online.
Since the initial announcement, Rockstar has maintained a low profile, revealing no new footage of GTA 6. This has led to some fans feeling uneasy about the possibility of another delay.
Grand Theft Auto 6 marks the first new entry in the franchise in over a decade, and expectations are sky-high. Its predecessor, GTA 5, has sold over 200 million copies globally since it first hit shelves for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The latest installment takes players back to Vice City, set in the fictional state of Leonida, with two main characters, Jason and Lucia, striving for a better life. In their pursuit, players will engage in heists, hijackings, and various escapades. Unlike previous games that depicted Vice City in a stylized ’80s light, this new adventure unrolls in a modern-day setting.
