At CES 2025, Hyperkin, a well-known player in the third-party gaming accessory landscape, unveiled plans to launch a revamped version of their ‘Competitor’ gamepad designed for Xbox consoles and PC (as reported by IGN).
The new gamepad is a wired-only model and brings significant improvements over the original ‘Competitor’. It features upgraded controls and a fresh controller layout that takes clear inspiration from the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.
The Gamepad’s design closely mirrors that of the PS5 DualSense controller, evident in its shape, segmented D-pad, and the arrangement of the buttons and analog sticks, which are positioned below the face buttons. This setup will allow players to enjoy Xbox Series X|S games using a PlayStation-style control scheme, which some may find preferable over the traditional Xbox controller layout.
In addition to its design, the Competitor Xbox Controller is equipped with Hall Effect joysticks and triggers. Unlike conventional analog sticks, Hall Effect joysticks utilize magnetic fields and electric sensors, offering players more precise control over their in-game movements. This technology also reduces the chance of stick drift and minimizes the need for large deadzones to capture a player’s input accurately.
Hall Effect triggers operate on a similar concept, leveraging magnetic fields and electric sensors to detect inputs without physical contact. This not only enhances the responsiveness of a player’s input but also lowers the physical effort needed to pull the trigger, leading to improved precision during gameplay and reducing long-term wear and tear on the controller.
Moreover, the Competitor Xbox Controller includes a handy mic mute button for seamless online chat communication, along with two programmable back buttons for additional in-game actions.
However, Hyperkin has yet to disclose a firm release date or pricing details for this promising controller.

Moving on to the practicality of this innovative controller, it presents an exciting opportunity for gamers seeking a PlayStation-like experience on their Xbox. Personally, I’ve enjoyed using the Razer Wolverine V2 Chromia, but I sometimes miss the feel of a PlayStation controller, particularly for genres like 2D side-scrollers or fighting games where a PlayStation D-pad excels over its Xbox counterpart.
But, will this bold approach from Hyperkin appeal to the broader Xbox community and secure a top spot among the best Xbox controllers once it hits the shelves? That remains to be seen.
