Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games have exciting news for tech enthusiasts: they’re embracing Android XR, gearing up to bring some of their bestselling games to Google’s new XR platform.
Android XR is poised to first appear on Samsung’s Project Moohan mixed reality headset, predicted to hit the consumer market in 2025. Unlike Google’s previous Daydream attempt, this is a full-on adaptation of Android crafted for XR gear. It won’t just handle your typical Android apps but will also support immersive XR experiences.
Both Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games have long been key players in the XR landscape. So, it makes sense they’re seizing this opportunity to be pioneers yet again. With their proven history of supporting all the big VR platforms, this move isn’t all that surprising.
In separate unveilings, Owlchemy Labs shared that its beloved VR game, Job Simulator, along with its much-appreciated sequel, Vacation Simulator, will both be available on Android XR. Meanwhile, Resolution Games announced their acclaimed game, Demeo, is set to join the Android XR lineup too.
Samsung is emphasizing hand and eye-tracking capabilities for the Project Moohan, comparable to Apple’s Vision Pro. However, it also plans to feature original first-party motion controllers and PC VR streaming, blending attributes from both devices.
For Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games, transitioning their titles to Android XR seems straightforward. Part of this ease comes from Unity’s first-day support for Android XR, combining with the OpenXR software standard, which both studios have already embraced on the Vision Pro.
Owlchemy Labs mentioned in a press release that developing for Android XR has streamlined creating immersive experiences across various XR gadgets. Their team found Unity’s engine integration smooth, reducing the need for third-party libraries, and allowing their existing games to transition seamlessly to the XR environment.
Similarly, Resolution Games’ CTO Johan Gästrin praised Google’s commitment to shared social XR experiences, saying it marks a significant move in the XR arena.
For new users, all three games offer intriguing entry points, from the quirky tasks in Job Simulator to the collaborative board game fun of Demeo. Nonetheless, whether other XR studios will embrace Android XR just as swiftly is uncertain. Much depends on the success of Project Moohan, especially considering its undisclosed price, detailed specifications, and exact release date.
