Everyone’s pretty aware by now that Sony’s attempt at building a Spider-Man universe, without the web-slinger himself, has been a bit of a mess. That said, the director of “Kraven the Hunter” is hoping you’ll still give his movie a chance.
Let’s look back at some of the previous releases: Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. They’re all linked to Spider-Man, crafted under Sony’s umbrella, and haven’t exactly hit the mark (though Venom has its unique charm, but let’s stick to the script here). It’s no secret that these films haven’t exactly wowed audiences, and J.C. Chandor, at the helm of “Kraven the Hunter,” is speaking out about it. In a chat with ComicBook, he admitted the overall reception hasn’t been stellar but urged fans to consider giving his film a shot.
While addressing the inevitable comparison, Chandor noted, “I don’t want to dive too deeply into specifics, but here’s my takeaway: as a filmmaker, my primary aim, particularly over the last few years in this universe, has always been to create something that resonates. I get that many fans were disappointed with certain decisions and outcomes in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.”
He continued, addressing the mixed reaction by saying, “Despite that, some of the films have become huge successes. So yes, the results have been mixed. We hope people are willing to give our movie a chance, look past previous disappointments, and see it with fresh eyes.” Now, if we’re being honest, his optimism might be skewed considering that the three successful films he’s talking about are all “Venom” movies, featuring a character who already has an established fan base. Can we really call that a mixed success rate?
Chandor further explained that he believes fans will “see for themselves that we’ve done our best to deliver a genuinely entertaining story. Once the credits roll, you’ll notice there’s room for plenty of exciting possibilities. My main objective was to hone in on this film, keep it distinct, and deliver a solid story. Then, who knows what opportunities might follow?”
As to what these future opportunities could be, it’s anyone’s guess. Obviously, they’ll hinge on how well this movie performs, so it’s a waiting game for us to see how it all unfolds.
Keep an eye out for “Kraven the Hunter,” hitting theaters on December 13. It might just surprise you.
