Back in September at the Connect event, Meta announced an exciting collaboration with Microsoft aimed at enabling Windows 11 PCs to connect wirelessly with Quest headsets. Now, the anticipation is building as they’ve confirmed that we’ll get a chance to preview this feature come December.
For users of the Quest 3 and Quest 3S, this development opens up a new world of productivity by facilitating a multi-monitor work setup. If you’ve experienced the seamless connectivity of Apple’s Vision Pro with a Mac via Mac Virtual Display, introduced earlier in February 2024, you’re already familiar with the concept.
The buzz from Microsoft is that they plan to roll out this feature in a public preview sometime in December. The goal? To win over users who are ever eager to boost their productivity levels.
Melissa Grant, who leads Product Marketing for Microsoft 365, conveyed in a blog post, “Windows in mixed reality ushers the comprehensive capabilities of Windows 11 into mixed reality headsets, first with the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Connecting your Quest headset to either your local Windows PC or a Windows 365 Cloud PC is effortless and sets up in mere seconds, providing a private, top-quality, multi-monitor workspace.”
During the initial reveal at the September Connect event, Meta showcased a nifty feature—the ability to connect to a PC just by glancing at your keyboard. This innovation enables you to instantly take control and move windows across multiple virtual screens, marking a significant evolution from the experience offered by Meta’s Air Link Remote Desktop.
While Quest has primarily established itself as a leading standalone VR gaming console, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sees this Windows integration as a significant leap forward. “We’re on the path to creating a versatile computing platform,” Zuckerberg explained. “It’s not just about gaming, although Quest excels at that. You’ll also be able to use it for applications, video streaming, and everything else you’d expect from a general-purpose computer. Quest truly offers the full package.”
We’re eagerly watching for any updates on this release, and we’ll make sure to keep you informed as more details emerge.
