Showtime is once again diving into the world of Dexter with a fresh prequel series, “Original Sin,” and fans can finally get a glimpse with the newly released first trailer.
Even though Dexter concluded over ten years ago, we’re living in an era where reboots and well-loved franchises reign supreme. The series was revived with “Dexter: New Blood” in 2022, a continuation set a decade after the original show wrapped. Now, Paramount and Showtime bring us yet another addition with “Dexter Original Sin.” Before diving deeper, let me give you a gentle heads-up about spoilers from the end of “New Blood.” The prequel is intriguingly tied to its predecessor. So, you’ve been warned!
The trailer reveals a few powerful moments from the finale of “New Blood,” featuring Dexter lying in the snow, blood trickling around him after being shot by his son, Harrison. As he’s treated in the hospital, his life seemingly flashes before our eyes, leading to the birth of our prequel narrative. Set in 1991 Miami, “Dexter: Original Sin” traces Dexter’s (portrayed by Patrick Gibson) evolution from an ordinary student to a justice-seeking serial killer. According to the official storyline, when Dexter can no longer suppress his lethal urges, he must navigate how to harness this inner darkness.
Guided by his father, Harry (played by Christian Slater), Dexter adopts a strict Code to discreetly eliminate those deemed deserving, all while flying under the law enforcement radar. This proves especially tricky as Dexter embarks on a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be thrilled to hear Michael C. Hall’s familiar voice as Dexter returns in narration form. Plus, there’s an exciting guest appearance by Sarah Michelle Gellar, known from her days on “Buffy.” Although being a prequel hints that Dexter won’t face any irreversible consequences, it still promises to be an entertaining journey.
Additionally, viewers might find some answers to the cliffhanger ending of “New Blood” since there’s another sequel series dubbed “Resurrection” on the horizon. It wouldn’t surprise me if the prequel wraps with Dexter waking up, alive and kicking. But to see how it all plays out, you’ll want to tune in when the series premieres on Paramount+ this December 13.
