Last year, Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to bring some thrilling news to the gaming community: they are bringing Dungeons & Dragons into the realm of virtual reality. This beloved tabletop RPG is about to enter a whole new dimension.
Up until now, details about this project have been scarce. But on Wednesday, fans got some big news. The companies dropped the official title and shared more insights into what players can expect from this VR D&D experience.
The game will be called Battlemarked. It’s built on the Demeo system by Resolution Games, which takes place in a virtual tabletop setting and lets players dive into gameplay reminiscent of D&D, complete with turn-based combat. Demeo’s unique action point system incorporates the use of playing cards to keep things interesting.
Interestingly, Battlemarked marks the first collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast. This partnership aims to deliver a more authentic D&D vibe than what Demeo could achieve alone. There’s a twist, though: in Battlemarked, a Dungeon Master isn’t necessary. This decision allows players to focus more on strategy and decision-making rather than deep roleplaying.
Upon release, Battlemarked will feature two story-driven campaigns for up to four players to enjoy together.
Gamers will have a range of platforms to choose from, including VR, PC, and consoles. While the list of supported devices hasn’t been made explicit, if we consider how Demeo is available on Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad, it’s plausible that Battlemarked might follow a similar release strategy.
A slick new trailer accompanied the announcement, showcasing the familiar Wizards of the Coast art style and giving a glimpse of the classes and races that fans can look forward to, including a fierce Dragonborn fighter and a stealthy Tiefling rogue.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about Battlemarked. Things like its release date, price, and specific details about the campaigns remain under wraps. Resolution Games did mention plans for additional campaigns set in various D&D worlds down the line but didn’t delve deeper into specifics.
Founded in Stockholm, Resolution Games has spent over a decade crafting unique gaming experiences. Their repertoire includes titles like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. To date, they’ve secured around $38.6 million in funding, according to PitchBook.
This announcement is part of a larger trend, as D&D’s influence continues to spread across mainstream media. The franchise has transformed into a multimedia powerhouse, inspiring popular web series like Critical Role and Dimension 20, video games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios, and even a movie release with “Honor Among Thieves.”
