Snap, the tech company that gave us Snapchat, is opening up some exciting possibilities with their newest version of the Spectacles AR Glasses, now more budget-friendly for students and educators thanks to a nifty discount slicing the original $1,200 tag in half.
Released in the fall of 2024, these fifth-generation Spectacles, affectionately known as Spectacles ’24, initially cater to developers with a subscription model priced at $100 monthly for those committing to a full year. This setup, however, hasn’t been particularly student-friendly given the financial constraints typically faced within educational settings.
The revamped Spectacles have made significant strides beyond their 2021 predecessors with a much wider field of view, enhanced resolution, added hand-tracking functionality, and a refined software suite. Nevertheless, the cost remained a hiccup for students and teachers eager to explore and create AR applications.
Snap is now addressing this challenge with an education discount, paring the monthly price to $49.50 over a minimum 12-month commitment. Alternatively, users can opt for a one-time payment of $594 covering the first year, followed by $49.50 each month thereafter.
There’s a small catch: only those with a .edu address or an equivalent from an accredited educational institution can snag this deal. Students and teachers across several countries, including the US, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands, are eligible for this benefit.
