Alta, renowned for their earlier work on A Township Tale (2021), has offered a sneak peek into their latest project, REAVE. This new dungeon-crawler, focused on extraction, promises an immersive experience as they reveal fresh details about its evolving systems, including an intriguing new dungeon and foe, all still under active development.
In their latest dev log, they provided an update on REAVE’s growing world. They’ve introduced the largest area yet, wonderfully named ‘The Fallen Bastion’. This expansive environment is a unique mix of open and confined spaces with both brilliantly lit and shadowy areas, perfect for player ambushes and hiding from adversaries.
“Within The Fallen Bastion, you’ll encounter a magical pedestal,” explains lead environment artist Sean Ellis. “Here, players can initiate a boss battle. Currently, we’re utilizing a giant spider to test these encounters, though it’s just a placeholder for something more tailored that’s in the works.”
The spider won’t be around long-term, but it’s essential in getting the feel for what real boss battles will be like as development progresses, the studio reassures.
Meanwhile, previously revealed regions have been receiving significant updates. Some might even see entire replacements as the team continues refining its vision for the game.
Alta also highlighted a fresh enemy model set to replace the placeholder skeletons. These new foes vary in difficulty based on their equipped weapons and armor, adding a new layer of challenge.
Being an extraction game, REAVE introduces an intriguing twist with its in-game currency—‘Echoes’. Although this name may change, Echoes are collected in a gradually filling vessel as you play. Slaying enemies releases Echoes, and they also appear throughout the game environment. This currency is vital, not only for opening loot rooms but also for enabling the players to exit dungeons, bringing their hard-won spoils back to the social hub to trade.
