Thanks to a recent update from the ESRB, we’ve discovered that a beloved Nintendo 64 title is making its way to the PlayStation 5. Even though you can already dive into its PS4 version on Sony’s latest console, this new release might just offer enhancements that fully utilize the upgraded hardware.
## Nintendo 64 Shooter Doom 64 is Coming to PS5
Indeed, Doom 64 is getting its own native port on the PS5. While we know the platforms it’s heading to, specifics about this updated version of the iconic id Software shooter remain under wraps. Often, when classics are re-released, they come with opportunities to earn new trophies or showcase features that make the most of modern technology. That said, it’s not always guaranteed, and we’ll just have to wait for the official announcement to know more.
Here’s what the ESRB had to say in its rating summary for Doom 64:
“This first-person shooter casts players as a lone space marine, waging war against demonic entities on Mars and in Hell. You’ll wield an arsenal of machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, plasma rifles, and even chainsaws to dispatch hellish creatures and mutated soldiers in high-octane combat. Expect to see enemies burst into graphic splatters when hit and crumble into visceral chunks upon defeat. The action is enhanced by the realistic sound of gunfire, earth-shaking explosions, and the screams of the vanquished. Some scenes feature gory details like mutilated body parts and severed heads placed on spikes or dangling from chains.”
Originally released in 1997 and developed by Midway, Doom 64 continues the storyline woven through Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom. Players will engage in the intense demon-slaying action typical of the franchise across more than 30 levels.
Currently, Bethesda oversees the Doom series, a company that operates under the Xbox umbrella. Nonetheless, Xbox hasn’t hesitated to allow its titles to appear on competing platforms. PlayStation fans have seen games like Pentiment and Sea of Thieves make their way to the PS5. Anticipate joining the Doom Slayer in his latest epic, Doom: The Dark Ages, planned for a 2025 release.
